Craig and me at the Claremont Depot in 2001
This project has been many months in development and many years in conceptualization. It stems from an idea I cooked up with my late friend and business associate Craig Miles. The idea just hung there in the ethers as "more pressing things" (projects that paid the bills) repeatedly took precedence. But life is short -- delay a thing long enough and it will never get done. Finally, we just had to do this.
Craig loved Claremont, which he often referred to as "the island" (as in island of tranquility) and he especially loved the opportunities for one-to-one human interactions that this close-knit community affords.
In a sense, this project's objective is to foster those kinds of interactions -- between people who share like interests, between customers and businesses, citizens and government, and between volunteers and community organizations. In contrast to social networking websites, which also bring people together, the Claremont Calendar is specifically designed to foster interactions between real people in the physical world, that is, right here in our local community.
Seeing this project finally come to fruition would certainly make Craig smile!
